Rather than having many different types of litter bins, the City of Vienna decided to use a standardised models for its standing and mounted litter bins. They chose the Littershark, which proved its worth several times over: the simple design blends in with the urban landscape, emptying is easy and the robust construction promises a long service life. The positive feedback from the public confirms that Municipal Department 48 (MA 48), which is in charge of waste disposal, made the right decision.

Magnificent buildings, such as St Stephen’s Cathedral and Schönbrunn Palace, attract people from all over the world – Vienna recorded 17.3 million overnight stays last year. Visitors and residents alike can enjoy its beauty undisturbed, as the staff of MA 48 work tirelessly to keep public spaces clean and visually appealing. Along with waste management and street cleaning, waste prevention and waste separation are among the central goals and concerns of MA 48.

The choice of litter bin is an important aspect towards these ends. It should make litter disposal convenient and the work of the street cleaning team easier – the Littershark achieves both, thanks to its high-quality materials and conceived design.

The 150-litre Littershark has been in use at MA 48 since 2009 and has proved its worth. There are currently around 2,200 of them distributed throughout Vienna replacing traditional mounted litter bins in places with high waste volumes for which the greater capacity makes sense.

The bin has a separate cigarette compartment to prevent fire spreading to other waste. They are equipped with inner baskets to make emptying easier. A key design detail ensures sustainable hygienic use: the sloping top prevents waste from being deposited on it and thereby unnecessary littering.

INSTALLATION EVEN AT AN ANGLE

Various installation options are available to meet various site conditions: A concrete base is used when bolting to the ground is not possible or practical. This ensures a secure stand with maximum flexibility if, for example, construction work requires a change of location. Alternatively, the standard base can be used for more permanent mounting to the ground. A swivelling and tilting base is available for sloping surfaces to compensate for slopes of up to 27 per cent. This makes it possible to use the Littershark just about anywhere.

VIENNA USES JUST ONE LITTER BIN MODEL

To simplify waste disposal for street cleaners and to provide visually appealing street infrastructure, MA 48’s aim was to standardise the litter bin models used in public spaces. They therefore reduced the variety of different systems for standing litter bins to just one model throughout Vienna. Positive public feedback on the look of Vienna’s litter bins confirms the efforts of the Municipal Department for Waste Management, Street Cleaning and Vehicle Fleet.

The discreet and appealing design blends in will with the cityscape, together with the typical Viennese design (stickers with important information such as the number of the waste collection service and witty slogans, orange edging around the chute opening and the orange banner). The standing litter bin is an essential urban infrastructure element, one that effectively and efficiently keeps Vienna clean in tandem with the street cleaning staff
