Littershark: simply well-conceived

A litter bin must withstand a great deal. No one knows this better than Frank Müller, operations manager at the Wangen im Allgäu building yard: “An urban bin should be vandal-proof. It must be easy to use, robust and durable”. After a long search, the yard chose the Littershark. The reason: “The system is simply so well-conceived”. It makes life a little easier for the employees of the municipal cleaning service in Wangen;

employees like Eugen Prinz, who regularly makes the rounds of the old town on his emptying tour. Around 40 Littersharks have been installed here, elegant anthracite-coloured cylinders that blend seamlessly into the urban environment. “They don’t stand out,” comments Prinz. “Nor should they. In fact, the litter bins have made such an impression that they have become part of the grounds of the State Garden Show, which is currently being held in Wangen.

Convenient handling – easy emptying

The Littersharks are also easy to use, as Eugen Prinz explains on site. He quickly opens the waste bin with a special wrench and flips open the front section. Behind it is a wide stainless steel ring that holds the bin liner. An ashtray is also built into the top of the Littershark. This allows the embers to cool down safely without posing a fire hazard.

Prinz pulls a spring flap once to empty it and several cigarette butts fall into the hanging bag. He then removes the full bin liner and pulls a new one over the stainless steel ring. This is a huge advantage, he explains, because before the Littershark was purchased, the people of Wangen used simple plastic bins.

“But they don’t have a bag, which meant that waste stuck to the bin and we had to wash them out”. These steps are simply skipped by changing the bin liners. Now quickly close the container and you are ready to go.

“Something like this simply meets contemporary demands,” according to Prinz. He is also particularly pleased with the design of the bin, which keeps the rubbish out of sight. “It’s just gone, as if the shark had eaten it.” It is an apt comparison – after all, the container resembles a reef shark with its iconic sloping lid and opening. The lid also has the practical effect of making it impossible to put rubbish that does not fit into the bin on top of it. This is convenient for the city’s cleaners, as rubbish on top of the bins is often blown into green areas. Another useful feature is the robust design. The use of three millimetre thick stainless steel ensures a high level of stability, which the specialists appreciate. “It will probably still be there in 20 years’ time,” says the Swabian with a happy smile.
