Ticino is Switzerland’s sunniest canton. No wonder, then, that locals and tourists alike enjoy strolling along the shores of Lago Maggiore. But they also leave behind a considerable amount of litter. In Locarno, employees of the municapl depot department had long struggled with the existing waste disposal system, which was impractical and was difficult to maintain. A new solution was needed. “The biggest challenge was to find a suitable replacement that would meet our needs,” according to municipal depot manager Alex Giacomelli. “But ANTA SWISS AG came along and surprised us with their best-selling model, the Littershark.”

Once convinced of its benefits for Locarno, the decision was clear: all existing waste bins – from the city centre to its most remote areas – would be replaced with the sleek, stylish and intelligent Littersharks.

After starting out with 50 Littersharks in 2020, the number of units has been continuously expanded. The goal: to eventually have up to 250 Littersharks to keep Locarno tidy while seamlessly blending into the urban landscape.

But that’s not all: Alex Giacomelli is also considering fully digitalising the maintenance and emptying of waste bins in Locarno with the help of the Littershark app and NFC tags attached to the bins.

The Littershark project is therefore in full swing in Locarno, and the reports and feedback on the new bins have been overwhelmingly positive.

The robust Littershark, which is virtually immune to the weather, scratches and damage and is also easy to maintain and look after, is a real asset to the city on Lake Maggiore.

The quick maintenance of the Littersharks saves a lot of time and makes the work of the municipal depot team much easier and more efficient.

Alex Giacomelli also praises how easy it is to work with the Littershark team, which dispelled any doubts and concerns and were quick to identify and meet Locarno’s specific needs.

Giacomelli’s municipal depot staff are also pleased with the design of the bins, as the opening on the front makes changing the rubbish bags faster and easier compared to the older models with vertical openings.

The quick maintenance of the Littersharks saves a lot of time and makes the work of the municipal depot team much easier and more efficient. Depot manager Alex Giacomelli is now looking forward to taking this project to the next level.
